Steeped in 500 years of celebration

Built in the 1530’s, during the reign of Henry VIII, its main use was for “Church Ales”, when ale was sold to raise funds for the Church.

Unfortunately the merriment and carousing that ensued drew unwelcome attention and the Ale House was closed in 1614 and instead became a residence for ‘paupers’.

With the addition of other buildings and the construction of a huge fireplace in the centre, the Ale House was inhabited by Colwall families for the next 300 years.  However it was condemned in 1934 as “unfit for habitation” and by the 1980’s it was in a sorry state

Realising what a waste this was, the Rector set about raising the necessary funds to save it and a major restoration was completed.

In 1989 the Ale House once again became a meeting place and centre for Parish and Village activities and is now available for you next event or celebration.
